Son of God and Son of Man John 5:19-47

17_0122: Jesus is the love of God who gives life to all who believe in Him. Jesus’s miracle on the Sabbath creates a confrontation with the religious people. They were seeking to kill him for the work he was doing. Jesus addresses them to validate his work by His being. He shows that He has been sent from God the Father with all His love and authority, and therefore is equal with God. He then uses four witnesses from their own religion to show how they point to Him as God. Two titles are used to demonstrate His work. As Son of God Jesus comes full of God’s love to give life. As Son of Man Jesus comes with all authority to give full life and execute judgment. But the people remain in unbelief and reject Him. Jesus confronts their unbelief by identifying two big problems that they use to mask their unbelief, religion and self-righteousness. Religion masks unbelief with a loveless substitute for God. Self-righteousness masks unbelief with a lifeless, man-centered glory. Religion never gives one the love they most desire. Self-righteousness never satisfies because it always offers a lesser glory.  Jesus stands ready to receive any person who will believe in Him and receive eternal life.
