Prayerwalking is a powerful weapon for missional advancement. Walking through the city opens the eyes of the pray-er to inform the prayer. The more informed the pray-er, the more potent the prayer. Prayer stirs the pray-er’s heart to hear from God and fill with compassion for the city. Prayerwalking unites pray-ers under King Jesus for his mission through the common experience of praying together. LifePoint is prayerwalking to pray for our city.
Prayer4Revival is a series to lead LifePoint in praying as a catalyst for revival. Revival must come to God’s people, the Church, before there can be any lasting affect on the city. As we celebrate our ninth anniversary this week, we thank the Lord for his blessing and petition him for greater glory in the city. Prayer is our first work to engage mission. We are sending each community group into the city to prayerwalk.
Each prayer group should focus on three kinds of prayers as you walk. First, intercession is petitioning God for a specific situation. As you walk, intercede specifically for the things you observe. Pray for people, families, needs, burdens, culture, and those things that are all around you. Pray for government leaders, business owners, and others that come to mind. Intercede means you pray in such a way that the needs of others become your burden that you take before the Lord for them. Take time in prayer to let the burdens of our city be impressed upon you and your prayer group.
Second, pray investigative prayers. Investigative prayers petition God for his will to be done on earth. You will encounter brokenness and situations that you are unsure how exactly to pray. Investigative praying engages God’s kingdom mission by remembering the story of God’s redeeming love for the situation or circumstance you are facing. Begin by acknowledging the reality that you see. Consider how it reveals one’s need for God. Address any specific issues of sin, separation, brokenness, or condemnation that are observed. The promises of God become powerful prayers back to God for situations where you are unsure how to pray. Pray for God’s truth to be revealed in those situations and for the hope, light, power, and encouragement of the gospel of Jesus Christ to shine forth!
Third, pray initiating prayers. When you pray these kinds of prayers in the city, you are asking God to do what only he can do for the city. Praise is a powerful resource to inform the substance of initiating prayers. When you praise God for who he is, ask him for that kind of powerful, redeeming work in the city. Pray that he might move in whole neighborhoods or parts of the city. Pray that he would do a work that only he can do for greater praise, honor, and glory.
Finally, be bold as you pray, and pray bold prayers. Prayer initiates mission in the city. We want to see where God is at work and join him. Pray that your eyes would be open to see him. Conclude your prayerwalk by thanking God that he is at work and that we get to be his ambassadors in the world.
